SEATTLE - Right fielder Mike Wagner belted two home runs and senior starter Sean White threw six solid innings as the Washington baseball team beat third-ranked Arizona State, 5-1, in the first game of an important three-game Pac-10 series Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The game was the third straight in which a Husky hit two homers. Wagner, a junior from Woodinville, upped his season total to 13, second on the team.
Washington, hoping to finish over .500 in conference play, took another step toward that goal, improving to 36-15 overall and 11-8 in the Pac-10 with five games left to play. Historically, an over-.500 Pac-10 record is good for an NCAA tournament invitation. ASU fell to 46-11 overall and 12-7 in conference.
White, who had a streak of eight straight wins over Pac-10 opposition broken last weekend in a loss at UCLA, got back on track with a strong outing against the Sun Devils. The righty from Mercer Island worked six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three. He improved his season record to 7-4.
ASU took a 1-0 lead in the second. Steve Garrabrants singled and stole second base before scoring on a single from Tuffy Gosewisch. Washington tied the game in the bottom of the second when Wagner led off with his 12th home run of the season.
Washington took its first lead in the bottom of the fourth. Shortstop Tila Reynolds singled and moved to second on a sacrifice fly before scoring when Wagner belted his second homer of the game, giving the UW a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, the Huskies scored a pair to make it 5-1. With John Otness aboard at second on a walk and a wild pitch, Brent Lillibridge singled through the right side. Otness slid past the tag at the plate and scored. Reynolds followed with a double to the wall in center and Lillibridge also narrowly beat a tag at home, giving the UW its four-run edge.
ASU freshman lefty Erik Averill (7-1) suffered the first loss of his career, allowing five runs on five hits over five innings.
Lefty reliever Trent Baysinger threw the final three innings for the UW to pick up his sixth save. Wagner and Reynolds accounted for five of the Huskies' six hits as Wagner went 2-for-2 with two walks and two homers and Reynolds was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
The Huskies and Devils play game two of the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
