Washington vs. Arizona State Post-Game Quotes
February 6, 2010

Washingon Coach Lorenzo Romar

Opening Statement:
"We never look forward to playing against Arizona State. That's for sure. We have a lot of respect for their team, how they run their program, which makes me even more excited to watch us play at the efficient level of basketball we played tonight. Nineteen offensive rebounds is a pretty good night at the office. [We] turned the ball over 10 times against their zone. I thought we moved ball well and got good looks. Overall, I just think defensively we were dialed in, led by the captain of our defense, Justin Holiday. He was all over the place. He gets ten rebounds again in there. That's a really nice job."

On Holiday's defense:
"His arms just extend, there's always a threat that his arm is there. He doesn't let you get away. He's quick, he anticipates, he's smart, he's physically tougher than you think and it's just hard to get away from him."

On team defense:
"That made the difference. We defended much better this time than we did in Tempe."

On taking this effort on the road:
"At this point, that's water under the bridge. We've got to move on from here. I will say that I think even though we are playing at home we are playing our best basketball of the year."

Quincy Pondexter:

On what was different this time against Arizona State:
"We did a great job defensively this time around with the addition of Justin Holiday, I think it made it so much easier on all of us to get our job done. We really wanted to take them off that 3-point line, which they are so good at, and make sure they had tough, contested shots each time. Our team did a tremendous job of buckling down on the defensive end and that was the difference today."

On scoring in the game:
"Our team did a great job of collectively scoring. We moved the ball really well and sometimes I was there like a decoy because we were up by so much. It made it so much easier on our guys. If teams are going to keep playing us like that, then we have to play like we did tonight by being unselfish and make open shots, and make shots period. We did a great job, Isaiah led it off in the scoring department and passing the ball. Everyone was highly aggressive against the zone."

On getting ready to play on the road again:
"We have a lot of momentum and I think we know what's at stake to be right up there at the top. That's something we've all wanted and won't count ourselves out. To be in the position that we are in right now to be back in it is fortunate because sometimes you lose a few and the season is over. We still have a good chance at winning the championship and that's our goal. We're the defending champions and we need to redeem ourselves.

Isaiah Thomas

On an emphasis on moving the ball around:
"I just focused on getting my teammates involved. My teammates got some shots and got open."

On the approach they wanted to take against Derek Glasser:
"We wanted to take him out of the game. He starts everything and if you can take a player like that off, then they have to go to the next guy. We did a great job on him and [Jamelle] McMillan. We let a couple of other key players get some points, but other than that we did a great job on their point guard."

On playing together as a team:
"We know that if we don't play as a team then we're not successful. It all starts with me and Quincy and we have to get others involved and get them confidence."

Arizona State Coach Herb Sendek:

Opening Statement:
"I think Washington really took it to us. They were very aggressive and I thought they played outstanding defense."

On the contrast from the game in Tempe:
"It was just two different games all the way around."

On getting down early:
"We had a hard time with their pressure and I thought the Washington guards were very dominant both defensively as well as offensively--getting the ball where it needed to go, they did a good job in transition. They just soundly beat us."
