SEATTLE -- The Washington men's and women's track team played host to their first and only home meet of the 2001 outdoor season, the Washington Outdoor Preview, Saturday.

The men and women ran against competitors from several area universities, community colleges and clubs, including Portland, Portland State, Central Washington, Western Washington, Seattle Pacific, Seattle University and Pacific Lutheran.

Sophomore Kate Bradshaw (Issaquah, Wash.) was the headliner for the Huskies, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a mark of 16:38.97 in the 5,000-meter run en route to winning the event.

Other event winners for the Husky women were: sophomore Megan Spriestersbach (javelin), junior Zee Ogarro (long jump), junior Searan Salibian (shot put), junior Kelsey Sheppard (100 & 400 meter hurdles), sophomore Tesha Moore (400m dash), and senior Chelsie Pentz (200m dash).

Salibian (shot put), Sheppard (400m hurdles) and Bradshaw (5,000m) also qualified for the Pac-10 conference meet with Saturday's performances.

It was a show of underclassmen on the men's side atop the event finishes. Sophomores Doug Jackson (shot put) and Greg Forni (200m dash) along with freshmen Cristian Adams (400m dash) and Jesse Giordano (400m hurdles) earned first-place finishes for the Huskies. The men's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams also took first in their events.

Senior Sean Steele (Orting, Wash.) and freshman Marc James (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also earned entry into the Pac-10 Championship meet with qualifying performances in the high jump and 110m hurdles respectively.

The Huskies will travel just down the road to Tacoma, Wash., for their next meet, the Pacific Lutheran Invitational Saturday, March 10. The meet begins at 9 a.m. PST. Three UW men, seniors Ja'Warren Hooker and David Bazzi along with sophomore Brad Walker will travel cross country to Fayetteville, Ark., to end their indoor season at the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 9-10.

Going the Distance Again

Senior David Bazzi ran a provisional qualifying time of 13:58.41 in the 5,000 meters at the Iowa State Cyclone Last Chance Qualifier Friday in Ames, Iowa. The mark is just 23-hundredths of a second off the automatic qualifying standard of 13:58.15. Bazzi may not have the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in two events as he had previously qualified for the NCAAs in the 3,000 meters. If not enough athletes reach the automatic qualifying standard, athletes who have reached the provisional mark will be added in order of performance until a full field is attained.
