Box Score

SEATTLE - UW starting pitcher Jorden Merry threw seven and one-third shutout innings for the win as the Washington baseball team beat Pacific, 8-0, Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at Husky Ballpark. The win was the Huskies' fourth in a row.

The Huskies (6-8) and Tigers (5-13-1) will complete their three-game series with the second game of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Merry, a sophomore from Pasco, Wash., who threw seven scoreless innings in last weekend's 1-0 win over UC Irvine, allowed just two hits, both singles, while walking four and fanning three to improve to 3-1 on the season. Jason Erickson allowed a hit over the final one and two-thirds to wrap up the shutout.

Washington took a lead with a run in the third inning. Brett Kaluza led off with a bloop single to right and scored from first base when Bradley Boyer laced a double to the wall in center field.

Washington broke the game open with five runs in the fifth. After back-to-back doubles from Boyer and freshman Brian Pearl opened the inning, senior Curt Rindal hit his fourth homer of the year. After the homer, Ty Rasmussen singled and Kyle Conley doubled to put runners at second and third. Matt Stevens followed with a grounder to third, but third baseman Justin Baum's throw to the plate to try and get Rasmussen bounced past the catcher, allowing two runs to score, giving the UW a 6-0 lead.

The Huskies' final runs came in the eighth. After Boyer reached on an error, Pearl tripled to drive in one. Matt Hague followed with a single to score Pearl, making the score 8-0.

Pacific starter Joey Centanni (0-5) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits over four and two-thirds innings.

The Huskies and Pacific close out the series with game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
