SEATTLE - Washington G/F Sami Whitcomb has received from the Chicago Sky's to join training camp. The Sky is one of 12 teams in the WNBA, and begins training camp on Sunday, April 25.
Whitcomb is the first player during Coach Tia Jackson's three-year history at UW to receive an invitation to a WNBA training camp.
"I'm really excited about this opportunity," Whitcomb said. "This has been a dream and a goal of mine ever since I began playing basketball. I just want to thank Coach (Steve) Key for giving me this opportunity and to Coach Jackson for helping to develop my game."
Under Jackson's tutelage, the Ventura, Calif., native became more of an all-court player. But she leaves a legacy at Washington as one of the most consistent scorers in the program's history. Whitcomb averaged 13 points per game in the 2009-10 season and ended her career with 1,205 points, which ranks 15th all-time in program history. She was named to the All-Pac-10 team this year and was the league's Player of the Week on Dec. 28.
"Her response to the things she's been challenged with was awesome," Jackson said. "She's never turned down a challenge, and she's always given her heart and soul to wanting to be the best player she can mentally, physically and emotionally."
Last season, the Sky finished fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 16-18 record.
Whitcomb said she plans to leave on Thursday for Chicago to join the Sky and begin preparations for training camp.
