Washington vs. USC

1/21/2010

Washington Coach Tia Jackson

Opening Statement: “It’s a big disappointment. We had the game. I am already playing back things in my head that had different situations, again how would it have turned out. Maybe a different play call or maybe a different defense. I am one of those coaches that will pick myself apart. I’m sure I will look at this game two or three times before we start practice tomorrow and say ‘what could we have done differently.’ I know one thing that just stands out right away. When we came down in a transition D a few times they isolated our guard who was sprinting back, getting back as a safety on defense, in comes 13 LaPlante burying our point guard in the paint for lay-ups. The next thing you know, there is a big on the shooter. They exploited that very well. I look at it and say we had a lot of very good individual play. We shared the ball extremely well, but I know they would give all those points and rebounds and everything back if we could have this victory tonight.”

On Ashley Corral’s shooting: “We knew it was coming. We knew it was coming. She is a kid who wants to take over the game. She wills the game and she has the green light at any given moment. I just think there was a couple times that maybe our hands should have been up a little more. We should have assessed her a little quicker, finding where she was on switches and on our defense. Hands down she is a good player. She made some good reads finding those pockets in the corner to nail those three’s.”

On Sami’s performance: “It was nice, but I know I gave her a challenge to start. To get 10 boards and she got 11. We will call that a highlight. Her numbers look great, but like I said we had a lot of them. Kristi had great numbers too, but I know they would give them all back if we could have the W. I know they would. It is great for the individual performances, but I know neither one of them could have done it without their teammates.”

Washington Guard Kristi Kingma

On frustration from losing: “It has been nice this year. We have been able to pull out the close ones, especially at home we have been able to come back from those deficits. Against the Arizona schools we did a really good job with that. I think there is a lot of good things we can take from this game, especially building into UCLA. Regina is diving on the floor. Morty (Sarah Morton) was making the extra pass and our bench was fired up. I think it is disappointing.”

USC Coach Michael Cooper

On the game: “We aren’t built on our offense and we know it. Our defense wasn’t playing that well, but they hit some big shots. I think Whitcomb was on fire and Kingma was on fire. They hit some shots they were supposed to hit. The thing about us is that we stayed with our defensive concept and it finally took hold in the second half.”

USC Guard Ashley Corral

On what caused her scoring outburst: “I think it kind of just took defense. Bri (Briana Gilbreath) got a couple of steals. We got up and pressured. I think that just changed the whole flow of the game. Once we start getting flows, our defense like coach said just builds on our offense. Defense builds confidence and I just think that is what helped us. On her playing in her home state: “It’s great. I get to see my family. Some of my friends come from middle school and people I used to play with all the time. I used to play with Kristi Kingma back in the day for a very long time. It is always nice to come up and play in my home stat and see my family.
