The World Track & Field Championships launched today in Berlin, Germany, and a trio of Husky alums are on hand to compete against the best athletes in the world. Veteran stars Brad Walker and Aretha Thurmond are looking to add to their legacies, while former NCAA 800-meter champ Ryan Brown is making his Team USA debut.
Brown left for Berlin on Friday, and will be doing some blogging for GoHuskies.com throughout his stay. He qualified with a third-place finish at the USA Championships last month. His first race will be on Thursday, August 20.
Thurmond's first action in the discus throw will come on Wednesday the 19th. This will be the fourth career World Championships for the 1998 grad and Husky Hall of Famer.
Walker will start his pole vault world title defense on the 20th. At the last World Outdoor Championships in Osaka, Japan, Walker had his greatest career win, as he cleared 19-feet 2.75-inches to win the gold medal. After a disappointing Beijing Olympics where he missed the final, Walker took a lengthy rest but returned to win his third U.S. title last month in Eugene.
Television coverage on weekdays will be provided by the Versus network, while NBC will show the championships next weekend. Also, universalsports.com provides a live webcast every day.
