SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team used a six-run third inning to coast to a 9-3 win over the University of British Columbia Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
While the game was an exhibition for the UW, it did count for UBC, which is a member of the NAIA and plays exclusively against American colleges in baseball. The loss dropped the Thunderbirds to 17-12 on the season.
Husky starter Elliott Cribby picked up the win in a pre-determined, four-inning start. He gave up two runs on five hits while striking out four. UBC starter Doug Grant (4-3) gave up three runs on four hits over two innings for the loss.
The Huskies scored a run in the first when Jake Rife walked, stole second and came around on a single from Matt Stevens. Washington added two more in the second on a two-out, two-run single from Rife, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Washington broke the game open in the third as the first six batters of the inning all reached base and scored. Runners scored on RBI singles from Joey Lind and Danny Cox and on a bases-loaded walk to Travis Nishioka. After an out, Rife picked up another RBI on a sacrifice fly before Aaron Russell drove in another with a single and a bases-loaded walk to Trevor Petersen closed out the rally with the Huskies on top, 9-0.
UBC cracked the scoreboard in the fourth when catcher Brendan Kornberger walked and Nic Lendvoy followed with a two-run homer to left. In the sixth, Lendvoy drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
This Thursday through Saturday, the Huskies take on Utah Valley State in a three-game series in Orem, Utah. The first two games get underway at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Saturday's finale begins at noon PDT. Live audio and stats for all three games will be available on the "Dawg Channel" at gohuskies.com.
