BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Washington Husky track teams faced off against Pac-10 competition for the first time of the 2001 outdoor season at the Cal Quad meet in Berkeley, Saturday and qualified three individuals for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Senior Ja'Warren Hooker (Ellensburg, Wash.) and sophomore Brad Walker (Spokane, Wash.), two of the three UW representatives at the NCAA Indoor meet last weekend, reached provisional qualifying marks while winning their respective events. Hooker, an eight-time All-America sprinter, tallied qualifying times in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, while Walker, an All-America pole vaulter, reached the qualifying height in the vault.

Senior David Bazzi (Seattle, Wash.), the third NCAA Indoor competitor, also won his event at the Cal Quad, however, missing the provisional mark in the 1500m by four tenths of a second. Senior Sean Steele (Orting, Wash.) was the meet's runner-up in the high jump, but the Huskies just couldn't muster enough top finishes to fight off Pac-10 rivals Cal, UCLA and Washington State, finishing fourth among the teams point-wise.

For the women, senior Anna Aoki (Vancouver, Wash.), the 1999 Pac-10 champion in the 10,000m, provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the 5,000-meter run, en route to winning her event. Sophomore javelin thrower Megan Spriesterbach (Lakewood, Wash.) also won her event, while sophomore Kate Bradshaw (Issaquah, Wash.) and junior Kelsey Sheppard earned runner-up spots in the 5,000 and 400m hurdles respectively.

The women also finished fourth among the schools despite those performances.
