SEATTLE (AP) - Brandon Roy scored a career-high 22 points to lead Washington to a 91-78 victory over the UC Riverside Highlanders Monday night.
Roy made 7-of-13 from the field as the Huskies shot 56.5 percent as a team and made 7-of-12 from 3-point range.
The Highlanders were unable to handle the Huskies' pressure defense in the second half. Following a 10-0 run that put UC Riverside (0-2) ahead 48-43 with 16:40 left to play, Washington applied a full-court press that snuffed the Highlanders' offense.
Washington went on a 32-6 run over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 75-54 lead. The Huskies coasted the rest of the way.
Besides defense and shooting, Washington (2-0) had a 44-22 edge in rebounding.
UC Riverside was led by Kevin Butler, who scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the first half. Nate Carter added 18.
The game was close in the first half. Washington turned the ball over 11 times, but UC Riverside managed to covert those mistakes into only five points.
The game was tied at 36 before Washington's Will Conroy scored four points in the final 48 seconds of the first half to give the Huskies a 40-36 edge.
