Box Score

SEATTLE - Pitchers Trevor Gibson and David Dowling combined for a seven-hit shutout as the Washington baseball team blanked the Matadors for the second straight game, winning 7-0 Sunday to sweep the three-game series.

The win was the 10th in a row for the Huskies (14-6), marking the third-longest winning streak in Ken Knutson's 10-plus seasons as UW's head coach. The Huskies twice won 11 in a row during the 1997 season.

Washington broke through to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Freshman Simi Reynolds belted a double off the left-field fence, moved to third on a flyout by his older brother Tila, and scored when Greg Isaacson lashed a single through the left side.

The Huskies scored a second run in the fifth to increase its lead to 2-0. John Otness singled and stole second base and, with two outs, scored on a single from Tila Reynolds.

In the sixth, with one out, Husky right fielder Taylor Johnson went the other way with a solo home run to left, his fifth of the year. Later in the inning, Chad Boudon walked and moved to third on a pair of errant pickoff throws from reliever Jon Bierly. Boudon scored to make it 4-0 when John Otness reached on an infield single.

Gibson (2-0), making his second start since returning from a preseason injury, worked five innings, holding the Matadors scoreless on three hits over five innings. The junior from Enumclaw gave up three singles, walked one and struck out four for the victory.

Dowling allowed four hits in his four innings of work to earn a save. For the weekend, the Huskies out-scored CSUN 27-2 and out-hit them, 38-12. The Matadors didn't notch an extra-base hit until Brian Lake doubled with out out in the ninth Sunday.

Northridge ace Leo Rosales (1-4), who had his start pushed back after suffering a rib-cage muscle pull in his last outing, threw five and one-third innings to take the loss. Rosales entered the game having walked only six while striking out 44 in 35.1 innings. Sunday, he walked two and struck out four. CSUN fell to 5-21 on the season.

The Huskies travel to UC Irvine next weekend for a three-game series and then travel to face Portland for a pair of mid-week games before opening Pac-10 play March 28-30 at Stanford.
