BANDON, Ore. -- The Husky men's golf team will have a steep hill to climb if they expect to replicate their previous two trips to Bandon Resort for the Bandon Dunes Championship.

Washington, who claimed an outright team title at the event in 2011 and shared it in 2012, are 17th out of 18 teams after shooting a season-high 310 (+22) in Friday's opening round at the Macdonald Course.

Oregon leads the field after shooting 290 (+2). Missouri-Kansas City and Colorado are tied for second, in the clubhouse with 291.

Twelve teams shot double-digits over par, including No. 2 UCLA who came in with a 12-over 300.

The Huskies entered the tournament as the third-ranked squad in the nation by Golfstat.com and ranked fourth by Golfweek.com, but could not get anything going on Friday. The Husky five combined for almost as many double bogeys (6) as they did birdies (7) on the 6,859-yard, par-72 course.

17 Washington 310 310
T34 Jonathan Sanders (5) 75 75
T42 Chris Williams (1) 76 76
T74 Cheng-Tsung Pan (2) 79 79
T80 Trevor Simsby (3) 80 80
T85 Charlie Hughes (4) 81 81

Jonathan Sanders escaped the most unscathed shooting 3-over 75. The freshman is tied for 34th entering Saturday's second round.

Senior Chris Williams, the world's No. 1 ranked amateur golfer, a Ben Hogan Award watch list member and the tournament's defending champion, shot 76 and is tied for 42nd. He finished the first nine holes at 1-under, but capped his back nine with a double-bogey on No. 18 to go with three other back-nine bogeys.

The Huskies two other Hogan Award watch list members also struggled. Cheng-Tsung Pan went 18 holes without a birdie and carded a 79, while junior Trevor Simsby went into the clubhouse with an 80. Pan is tied for 74th and Simsby tied for 80th.

Charlie Hughes, who won the tournament in 2011, shot an 81 and is tied for 85th.

Three Huskies are also competing as individuals in the tournament. Larry Iverson and Chris Babcock shot an 84.

The 18 teams get back at it again tomorrow early. The Huskies will start teeing off at 8:45 a.m.
