HELSINKI, Finland - Former Husky Aretha Thurmond was named captain of the United States women's track and field squad Friday night, by a vote of Team USA members competing at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Former UCLA thrower John Godina was named the men's team captain, while 2004 Olympic gold medalist Dwight Phillips was selected to bear the American flag for the U.S. contingent at Saturday night's opening ceremonies.

Thurmond, known as Aretha Hill before marrying thrower Reedus Thurmond in April, is one of three former Huskies competing at this year's World Championships, running Aug. 6-14 at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium.

The 1998 UW alum and two-time Olympian is making her third World Championships appearance, having also competed in 1999 and 2003. Thurmond placed third in the discus at the USA Track and Field Championships in June, following consecutive U.S. discus titles in 2003 and 2004.

Thurmond will open her competition Sunday in qualifying rounds of the discus, with the finals scheduled for Tuesday. In addition to Thurmond, 2004 UW grad and reigning U.S. pole vault champion Brad Walker will also compete in Helsinki, as will 1998 UW alum and Swiss 10,000-meter national-record holder Christian Belz.

Same-day television coverage is available on the PAX network, beginning Sat., Aug. 6 and continuing throughout the competition. For a complete television schedule, see the chart below.
