SEATTLE - The 2012 Washington baseball team returns to the Husky Ballpark field for the first full-squad practice of the fall Saturday.
The Huskies, under third-year head coach Lindsay Meggs, will begin four weeks of fall workouts Saturday at noon. The fall practice season concludes with the annual Purple & Gold World Series, a series of four intra-squad games, Oct. 13-16.
The 2012 UW team welcomes back its top four hitters from last year: outfielder Joe Meggs, third baseman Jacob Lamb, DH Ryan Wiggins and catcher B.K. Santy, as well as returning starters in Chase Anselment and Ty Afenir.
What was a young pitching staff in 2011 returns as a veteran crew in 2012. Six of the top seven arms from last year are back, including four sophomores, as Zach Wright, Adam Cimber, Jeff Brigham, Tyler Kane, Aaron West and Austin Voth all return.
A big crop of newcomers includes 17 of the 21 players who signed National Letters of Intent. Among that group are four players who were selected in the last June's Major League Draft: 1B Trevor Mitsui (Shorewood HS), P George Asmus (Ohlone College), P Jared Fisher (Newport HS) and IF Erik Forgione (W.F. West HS).
"It will be great to get this group on the field to start working together. We have high expectations for both our incoming class and the guys coming back so we are anxious to get started," said Coach Meggs. "And I'll tell you, you can't help but get excited when you're around these guys. They are ready to go to work. And it doesn't hurt to see our new facility being built as we're starting fall baseball. This is going to be a great fall."
The UW will hold its annual Alumni Weekend Sept. 23-25, with a golf tournament on Friday, a tailgate before the UW-Cal football game on Saturday, and the Alumni Game on Sunday. For more on the Alumni Weekend, click here.
