AZUSA, Calif. - Junior All-American Jeremy Taiwo wrapped up his first decathlon of the season with a sixth-place finish at the Mt. SAC Relays today, competing at the Cougar Athletic Stadium at Azusa Pacific. Several Huskies also got the long weekend started at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California, competing in the steeplechase.
Taiwo was 10th after Wednesday's opening day, but moved up four spots on Thursday with a strong showing in the 110-meter hurdles, and a second-place effort in the closing 1,500-meter run. The 2010 Pac-10 runner-up scored 7,335 points over the two day competition.
Also competing at Azusa Pacific was sophomore Sarah Schireman and freshman Shelby Williams in the heptathlon. The two wound up side-by-side in the final standings after seven events, with Schireman finishing 24th with a score of 4,370, and Williams placing 25th with 4,312 in her first college heptathlon. Schireman's highest-scoring event was the 100-meter hurdles, which she ran in 15.21 seconds, and she tied her PR with a 5-1 high jump. Williams was 10th overall in the final 800-meter run, clocking 2:26.34 for her highest-scoring event.
In Walnut, the Relays opened with several heats of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 10,000-meter run. Three Huskies ran in the same heat of the men's steeple. Sophomore Greg Drosky was the top finisher, placing ninth in the heat with a personal-best time of 9:14.15. Freshman Aaron Beattie was 11th, crossing in 9:16.48 in his first career steeple, while sophomore Michael Miller ran 9:29.28, twenty seconds off the pace he ran last week at Oregon.
