Seattle - The coin toss for Saturday's home football game against California will take place in Iraq in observance of Veterans Day. The special coin toss ceremony is a result of the United States Army's outreach initiative to involve college and professional football teams in recognizing the troops in Iraq during Veterans week.
Major General Peter W. Chiarelli will execute the coin toss this week from his headquarters in Iraq. The ceremony will be video taped and then shipped to Husky Stadium to air pregame after the California game captains make their selection of heads or tails. The Pac-10 Conference office has worked with Washington to ensure the logistics of the ceremony is in keeping with league procedures.
Major General Chiarelli hails from Seattle and is a Distinguished Military Graduate of Seattle University. He received a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Washington. Since August 2001, Major General Chiarelli has served as the Director of Operations, Readiness and Mobilization at the Headquarters for the Department of the Army. His daughter, Erin, worked in the UW football office from 2002-2004.
There are 15 colleges that will be involved in game day ceremonial coin tosses as well as all NFL teams. Their initiative to get involved in the game includes messages from the troops as well as the coin toss.
