Box Score

SEATTLE - A solid pitching performance from junior Aaron West and homers from Caleb Brown and B.K. Santy led the Washington baseball team to a 4-2 win over CSU Bakersfield in the first-game of a non-conference series Friday at Husky Ballpark.

West improved to 4-1 with the victory. He gave up one run on five hits over six innings, striking out five. Three Husky relievers - Tyler Kane, Nick Palewicz and Joshua Fredendall - pitched one inning each in relief to close out the victory for the Huskies (13-7). Fredendall picked up his fifth save of the year.

CSUB starter Jeff McKenzie (1-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits over five and two-thirds innings in the loss. The Roadrunners fell to 7-12 on the season.

Washington opened the scoring in the third. With Jayce Ray and Joe Meggs at second and third thanks to a pair of singles and an errant pickoff throw, UW freshman Branden Berry reached on a hard-hit single that was knocked down by the CSUB third baseman, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Huskies got consecutive, one-out singles from Robert Pehl, Santy and Ty Afenir, the third of which brought home Pehl to increase the UW lead to 2-0.

In the fifth, with Tyler Shryock at second with two outs, CSUB left fielder Kevin Younger belted a double to deep right-center to get his team on the board, cutting the Husky advantage to 2-1.

On the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning, Brown, a senior from Bremerton went the opposite way, belting his second homer of the season over the right-field fence to increase the lead to 3-1. In the sixth, Santy hit his first homer of the year, a line drive to straightaway center, to make it 4-1.

The Roadrunners picked up a run in the eighth when Oscar Sanay singled, moved up two bases on a wild pitch and then scored on a D.C. Legg groundout.

In the ninth, Bakersfield threatened as the first two batters of the inning reached base on a single and a walk. After a bunt moved them to second and third, Fredendall struck out the next two batters to wriggle off the hook with the victory in tact.

The Huskies and Roadrunners continue the series with game two Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and close it out Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
