Box Score

SEATTLE - California's Tyson Ross limited the Washington baseball team to two runs over six innings as the Golden Bears beat the Huskies, 8-3, in the first game of a three-game, Pac-10 series Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

Cal improved its chances at earning a berth to the NCAA tournament, improving to 29-24 overall and 12-10 in Pac-10 play. The fourth-place Bears can now finish no worse than 12-12 in league play. Washington fell to 27-27 overall and 9-13 in the conference.

Ross (6-6), who will pitch for the U.S. national team this summer, picked up the win, allowing seven hits and striking out three. Husky starter Jason Erickson (4-3) went only two-plus innings in the loss, giving up five runs on six hits.

Cal jumped out to a quick lead with three runs in the first. Brett Jackson tripled to lead off the game and then scored on a single from Charlie Cutler. A walk and an infield single loaded the bases and two runners came in on when Jeff Kobernus grounder was fielded for a force at second, but the throw to first for a possible double play bounced wide of the bag, allowing a third run to score.

In the second, the Huskies got on the board. After leading off with a single, Brian Pearl advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch before scoring on a grounder from Matt Stevens, cutting the lead to 3-1.

In the third, Cal opened the inning with a pair of singles. Bryce Mooney came on to replace Erickson and hit Kobernus to load the bases. Blake Smith grounded out to first to drive in a run and Ryan Hanlon singled up the middle to plate two more, giving the Bears a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, UW senior Curt Rindal doubled and scored on a two-out single from Ty Rasmussen to get one run back, but Cal got a sacrifice fly from David Cooper in the top of the fourth to make it a 7-2 lead.

Washington posted a third run in the seventh when Brett Wilcox singled and eventually scored on a Danny Cox groundout. Wilcox went 3-for-5 and Bradley Boyer was 3-for-4 to lead the Husky offense.

Cooper, who doubled off the wall to drive in the Bears' final run in the ninth, went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in for Cal.

The Huskies and Bears continue the series with games Saturday at 2:00 p.m . and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio.
