Waikoloa, Hawaii - The 21st-ranked Washington men's golf team is tied for sixth after the first 18 holes of play at the Waikoloa Invitational, held at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. The Huskies shot a 5-under 279 and trail tournament-leading Georgia Tech by 11 strokes. The Yellow Jackets posted a 16-under score of 268 to own a four-stroke lead over Oklahoma State. Washington shares sixth place with Oklahoma and Texas.

"It wasn't a great day for us," said Husky head coach Matt Thurmond, "but it wasn't terrible either."

Junior Alex Prugh and senior James Lepp led the Huskies' first round effort. The two are tied for 11th overall after shooting 3-under 68 during the first round.

Husky sophomore Zach Bixler, scheduled to play in the event, was scratched due to illness and replaced by sophomore Joe Panzeri. Panzeri carded an even par 71 to tie for 45th after round one.

"I'm proud of Joe - he came in here late last night, hadn't seen the course, and shot a 71," Thurmond said, discussing the flu bug that afflicted the team. "With as sick as our team has been, I'm just happy we were able to field a team."

Junior Erik Olson held fourth position for Washington with a 1-over 72, good for 62nd overall, while sophomore Sterling Clark carded a 2-over 73, which placed him 74th in the field.

The Waikoloa Invitational continues Thursday at 7 a.m. local time.
