SEATTLE - Arizona State erupted for nine runs in the third inning en route to a 17-1 rout of Washington Monday at Husky Ballpark, completing a sweep of the team's three-game Pac- 10 series. The game was called after seven innings due to rain, which began in the second inning and never abated.
The 18th-ranked Devils improved to 34-16-1 on the season and 12-9 in Pac-10 play, assuring themselves of at least a .500 record in the league. Washington, which was more or less eliminated from any chance at the postseason with Sunday's loss, fell to 29-19 overall and 7-14 in conference play.
The Devils entered the third with a 2-1 lead. In the inning, all of ASU's nine runs came with two outs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mike Lopez walked to send in a run before Jeff Phelps doubled down the left-field line to plate three more. After Phelps scored on a Ryan McKenna single, two more runs came in on an error and catcher Casey Myers capped the inning with a two-run double.
ASU starter Eric Doble (2-2) worked six innings for the victory, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four. UW sophomore starter Sean White (3-3) suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs in two and one-third innings.
Washington's only run came in the second when sophomore designated hitter Bryan Johnson hit a solo home run.
Myers finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI as he also hit a two-run double in ASU's four-run sixth. Nick Walsh was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and Phelps went 1-for-4 with four RBI.
The Huskies close out the home schedule Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader vs. Gonzaga. The second game of the doubleheader will air on KSRB AM-1150, a late addition to the broadcast schedule. There will be no game Wednesday as the Bulldogs need to depart Seattle earlier than anticipated to take part in the West Coast Conference championship at Pepperdine.
