SEATTLE - Cal Poly right-hander Eric Massingham limited Washington batters to only two hits over the first seven innings and left fielder Luke Yoder hit two home runs as the Mustangs beat the Huskies, 6-2, Friday at Husky Ballpark.
After allowing a one-out single in the second to Bradley Boyer, who was caught stealing, Massingham retired 11 Huskies in a row before giving up a double to Kyle Conley with one out in the fifth. After the double, Massingham set down the next eight Huskies in a row before Conley doubled again to lead off the eighth.
The Huskies broke up the shutout bid when freshman Troy Scott hit a long home run to right field with Conley aboard in the eighth.
In the end, Massingham (1-2) allowed five hits, two runs and didn't walk a batter while striking out six in a complete game as the Mustangs improved to 4-5 on the season.
Husky starter Nick Haughian (1-1) suffered the loss. In his six innings, he allowed six hits and three runs while striking out six. Washington fell to 4-5.
The visitors took the early lead when Yoder, the Mustangs' leadoff hitter, opened the first inning with a home run to right, his second of the season.
In the third, as the rain began to fall, the Mustangs added to their lead. With two on via walks and two out, third baseman Brent Morel doubled to the gap in left-center field, driving in a pair to make it a 3-0 lead for Cal Poly.
Yoder, the only Cal Poly player with a home run this season, hit his second of the game and third of the year in the seventh. Later in the inning, Morel's two-out single drove in another, increasing the Mustangs lead to 5-0. The Mustangs added a sixth run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.
The three-game series continues with a 1:00 p.m. game Saturday and an 11:00 a.m. start on Sunday. Fans can catch live audio and stats of all games at gohuskies.com.
