GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomores Jorden Merry and Tyler Cheney combined to pitch the Washington baseball team to a 6-3 win over St. John's Saturday night in the UW's final game of the ECU Invitational at Clark-LeClair Field.

The Huskies (1-5) picked up their first win of the season while the Red Storm dropped to 0-6.

Merry, a JC transfer from Pasco, Wash., picked up the victory to improve to 1-1. Over six innings, he allowed three runs on five hits, striking out six and walking two. Cheney, a lefty from Richland, Wash., held St. John's scoreless on four hits over the final three innings to earn the first save of his career.

Red Storm starter Jared Yecker (0-2) gave up four runs (all of them unearned) in five-plus innings for the loss.

St. John's scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead, but the Huskies rallied to move in front with four runs in the third.

Bradley Boyer, who hit two doubles in the UW's loss to East Carolina earlier Saturday, started the rally with a leadoff double. Andy Lentz reached on an error to put runners at the corners. After Boyer scored on a Jake Rife groundout, Lentz scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch, tying the game.

With two outs and the bases empty, Matt Hague drew a walk before senior Curt Rindal belted his second homer of the year to left, giving the Huskies a 4-2 lead.

In the sixth, St. John's threatened to either tie or move back in front. After a leadoff walk, Daniel Rose doubled to put runners at second and third with not outs. However, only one run came across, on a sacrifice fly, keeping the UW on top, 4-3.

Washington added single runs in the seventh and the eighth to pad its lead. Boyer drove in one with his second double of the game and his fourth double in two games Saturday. In the eighth, the Huskies scored thanks to a dropped fly ball.

Sam Deluca drove in all three of St. John's runs to lead his team, going 3-for-3

Washington opens a 12-game homestand Tuesday with the 2007 home opener vs. Portland. First pitch at Husky Ballpark is slated for 3:00 p.m. Fans can catch live audio and live stats at gohuskies.com.
