Junior-to-be John Otness, an infielder on the Washington baseball team, has been named the Most Valuable Player of his summer team, the Aloha (Ore.) Knights. Otness was also named to the All-Pacific International League's first-team.

Otness, from Tacoma's Wilson High, batted .297 with a wood bat for the Knights, which finished second in the PIL's southern division and advanced to play in the National Baseball Congress World Series. At the World Series, he went 8-for-17 with four runs batted in.

Four other Huskies received All-PIL honorable mention -- Aloha infielder Nick Batkoski (Federal Way), Bend (Ore.) infielder Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen), Bellingham pitcher Trevor Gibson (Enumclaw) and Seattle catcher Ben Johnson (Bellevue).

The Huskies open fall practice in September and open the 2003 season Feb. 7 at a tournament at Pepperdine University.
