SEATTLE - Washington women's basketball signed three prep standouts to national letters of intent, head coach June Daugherty announced Wednesday. Laura McLellan (Leigh HS/Campbell, Calif.), Sara Mosiman (Kings HS/Seattle, Wash.) and Sami Whitcomb (Buena HS/Ventura, Calif.) make up this year's recruiting class and will join the Huskies for the 2006-07 season.

"The 2006 class is very exciting and we are proud of the additions to our Husky basketball family," Daugherty said. "Sara and Sami will add solid scoring and guard play to our perimeter game, while Laura will give us good size and strength in our front line."

McLellan, a 6-2 post player, is one of two California recruits, coming from Campbell, Calif., and Leigh High School. A four-year letterwinner and three-year team captain, McLellan was a San Jose Mercury News All-Team selection in 2004 and a Cal-High Sports Player of the Week selection in 2005. She led her prep squad to two Blossom Valley League titles in 2003 and 2005, and was a first-team all-league selection as a junior. As just a freshman, McLellan earned league MVP honors, as well as team MVP honors.

"Laura is a talented post player with a low block presence and nice perimeter skills," Daugherty said. "She is a tough player on the boards who likes to get into the up tempo style. She enjoyed valuable summer basketball experiences playing with the highly competitive East Bay Xplosion AAU team."

McLellan led the Xplosion to a third place finish at the 2004 AAU Nationals in North Carolina, as well as team titles at the Adidas Deep South Classic, the California Classic and the Adidas Summertime Invitational, all in 2005.

Mosiman, a 5-9 guard and Seattle native, attends Kings High School in Shoreline, Wash., where she is a talented multi-sport athlete. She earned NCSAA (National Christian School Athletic Association) All-America honors in both basketball and volleyball last year as a junior. A two-time first-team All-State selection in basketball (2004, 2005), Mosiman led her prep squad to the 2005 2A state title and was a unanimous pick for MVP honors at the 2A state tournament.

"Sara is an accomplished multi-sport athlete who is a proven winner," Daugherty said. "She is a combination guard who brings strong skills and a great deal of athleticism to our program. She is very well suited to play in the Husky pressure defense and up tempo scoring systems. Sara is a well coached player from the state of Washington that makes everyone around her a better player."

Mosiman was a two-time Cascade League MVP (2004, 2005) and led her squad to three straight district and league championships. Not only an excellent hoops player, she was named the Seattle Times 2A Volleyball Player of the Year and was a two-time all-state selection. Mosiman also excels in track and field, winning the javelin title and finishing runner-up in the high jump at the 2004 state meet.

Washington's third signee is Whitcomb, a 5-10 guard out of Buena High School in Ventura, Calif. Whitcomb was a two-time first-team All-Channel League and All-Ventura County selection the last two seasons. She was also selected as the Co-Channel League MVP, the Co-County Player of the Year and a first-team all-state selection as a junior. Her Buena team advanced as far as the regional semifinals during her sophomore and junior seasons.

"Sami is a skilled competitor at the guard position with a high basketball IQ," Daugherty said. "She understands the game and plays with toughness and tenacity. Sami is a gifted scorer who can create for herself and teammates. Sami gained valuable experience playing for one the of the premier high school coaches in the country, Joe Vaughan."

In addition to her accolades on the basketball court, Whitcomb also excelled in track and field. As a junior she placed second in the Channel League in the spot put.
