SEATTLE - Former Huskies Kate Deines and Veronica Perez headed to Iceland on July 25 after signing contracts to play for Stjarnan FC.

The women's section of Stjarnan plays in Iceland's top division, the women's Úrvalsdeild. In 2011 the team won the championship two weeks before the end and thus qualified to the 2012-13 UEFA Women's Champions League. The team also reached the final of the Icelandic Women's Cup in 1993 and 2010, losing 1-3 and 0-1 respectively.

The Úrvalsdeild kvenna is the premier division women's football league in Iceland. It features 10 teams that play a double round robin to decide the champion, which qualifies for a spot in the UEFA Women's Champions League.

Deines finished her Husky career in 2011, helping UW to three NCAA Tournaments and the Elite 8 in 2010. She most recently played for the Seattle Sounders Women, helping them advance to the playoffs. In her senior year at UW, she was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List, a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award candidate, an all-region and all-conference selections, the Husky/Nike Invitational Offensive MVP and named to the 20-Year All-UW Women's Soccer Team.

Perez also played for the Sounders this past summer and is a member of the Mexican National Team that played in the World Cup in 2011. She finished her career at UW in 2009 and has since volunteered with the Huskies. She also has experience playing for the USA U-23 National Team and in the WPS with other former Husky greats, Hope Solo and Tina Frimpong.

The two will play the next fourth months of the regular season with the team and will continue to play in the playoffs if the team advances.
