CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Hopkins' 10th-inning single drove in John Wallace with the winning run as Oregon State swept a doubleheader from the Washington baseball team with a 2-1 win in the nightcap Saturday at Goss Stadium.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Oregon State handed the UW an 8-1 loss to break the Huskies' 11-game winning streak. Washington finished the day 16-8 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10. OSU improved to 13-7 and 2-0.

In the 10th, Wallace led off with a hard grounder headed up the middle. UW second baseman Bradley Boyer made a spectacular grab to field it, but his throw to first sailed into the Husky dugout, putting Wallace at second. After a bunt moved him to third with the first out, Hopkins singled through the left side to end the game.

UW starter Jorden Merry went nine innings in the start, but didn't figure in the decision. He allowed one run on only four hits while walking two and striking out eight. Husky reliever Elliott Cribby (1-3), who came on to begin the 10th, suffered the loss.

Merry had gone 21 and two-thirds innings as a starter this year without allowing a run until Oregon State got one in the third. With two outs and John Wallace aboard at third via a double and a sacrifice bunt, Merry's 3-2 pitch to Joey Wong got past the catcher and Wallace scored on the wild pitch, giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

Washington scored its run in a similar manner in the top of the fourth. With Troy Scott at third on a double and a wild pitch, OSU starter James Nygren threw another pitch past the catcher, but Scott couldn't come home as the ball didn't get that far away. However, catcher Ryan Ortiz turned and threw to the plate anyway, and his throw got past the pitcher, allowing Scott to score, tying the game a 1-1.

Nygren didn't figure in the decision, leaving the game after eight innings with the score tied at 1-1. In his eight innings, he allowed one run on four hits while walking two and fanning six. Mark Grbavac, who worked the final one and two-thirds innings, picked up the victory to improve to 3-0.

The Huskies and Beavers close out the three-game series Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. game, which will air live both on KKNW AM-1150 and FSN-TV.
