Seattle - Mike Mapu, a sophomore defensive end at Mesa (Ariz.) Community, has signed a national letter of intent to enroll at Washington in January and play football for the Huskies. A native of Pago Pago in American Samoa, Mapu earned first-team junior college National Junior College All-American honors after piling up 16 sacks in 10 games last season for a Mesa team that compiled a 3-7 record.

Mapu earned Arizona Community College Athletic Conference honors in 2002 and was named a first-team Western States Football League All-American.

Mapu originally signed a national letter of intent with Fresno State in 2001. He attended Eastern Arizona College as a freshman before transferring to Mesa C.C. Mapu was a two-time all-league selection and named the most valuable player of the American Samoa High School Athletic Association All-Star game as a senior. He played quarterback and defensive end at Faga'itua High School.
