» Roth Named GoHuskies.com Student-Athlete Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Senior Scott Roth has a pair of NCAA titles and six All-America honors, but one award escaped him until today, as he earned his first career Pac-10 Field Athlete of the Week honor, the conference office announced. Roth broke the UW pole vault school record on Saturday in a victory at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California. Roth was also named GoHuskies.com student-athlete of the week on Monday.

Competing against a field of professionals that included vaulters with Olympic Games experience, Roth stole the show with a sterling performance. He did not enter competition until 17-9 1/2, but cleared it on one try. He then passed to 18-5 1/4, and cleared that on his first attempt for a new outdoor PR. The bar went up another four inches, to 18-9 1/4, but once again Roth needed just one vault to clear it. That easily surpassed American record-holder Brad Walker's former school record of 18-6 ½ set in 2003.

Roth took three shots at 19-0 ¾, which would have been a new Pac-10 record, barely brushing off the bar on his second attempt. Still, the 18-9 ¼ clearance is the best pole vault by an American in 2011 indoors or outdoors, and it is the second-best clearance in the world outdoors this season.

To win his second NCAA Indoor Championship last month, Roth cleared just 18-0 ½, coming back off a hamstring injury. Clearly the Granite Bay, Calif. native is now back at full strength. Also of note is that Roth's clearance earned him the `A' Standard necessary to compete at the 2011 IAAF World Championships starting in August in Daegu, Korea should he earn a spot on Team USA.

This is the second week in a row that a Husky has earned one of the four weekly Pac-10 track and field honors. Sophomore James Alaka earned the men's track distinction last week. Roth is the first Husky men's field athlete to earn the honor since Will Conwell in 2006, and the first UW pole vaulter since Walker got the nod in 2002.
