SEATTLE - Washington crews swept first-place honors in all 11 races Saturday on the Montlake Cut, including the third-ranked men's near boat-length win over No. 10 Oregon State in the varsity eight competition during the annual dual regatta between the Northwest rowing rivals.

The Huskies' 12th-ranked varsity eight posted an open-water victory over the Beavers, heading a list of wins by UW crews in six women's races.

Washington won every event against OSU for the second straight season, matching the feat accomplished last season on Lake Vancouver.

Saturday's regatta featured the return of former UW men's freshman coach Fred Honebein who is in his first season as the head coach at Oregon State. Honebein has his top boat ranked in the top 10. The Beavers' game varsity crew maintained contact with the Huskies throughout the 2,000-meter course, but could not overcome an early deficit. Washington recorded a time of 5:43.0 and OSU finished in 5:46.0.

The Husky men's junior varsity remained undefeated, improving to 5-0 with an almost 10-second victory. UW won by open water with the fastest time of the day, 5:42.8. The Beavers finished in 5:52.5.

"I think we had a better race today than we did last weekend and that's where we need to be right now," said UW men's coach Bob Ernst who varsity eight sustained its only loss April 23 against No. 2 California. "We need to keep making progress. I don't think there's any question about it, we've got to find some more speed before we get to the IRA and hopefully the Pac-10. The good news is the varsity and jayvee are going pretty fast."

The Huskies left no doubt in the varsity women's race, going wire-to-wire for a convincing 10.5-second victory. UW clocked a time of 6:31.5 followed by the Beavers in 6:42.0.

The closest race of the day came in the women's junior varsity eight competition. Washington held off OSU to win by three seats with a time of 6:36.01. The Beavers finished in 6:37.14 and a second UW boat in 7:01.7.

"I was really happy with both the varsity and junior varsity's performance today. We took a really important step forward in being able to go out on race day and show our best stuff," remarked UW women's coach Eleanor McElvaine. "We still have some things that we need to work on, but they came ready to race and didn't let their nerves get to them like we did against Cal."

UW registered an impressive 18-second triumph in the women's varsity four race. The Huskies had a time of 7:18.0 and OSU crossed the finish line in 7:36.3.

Washington crews were also victorious in a trio of women's novice events for eights, second eights and fours. The Husky men also won the freshman and second freshman eight races and went unopposed in the varsity four.

The Huskies now turn their attention to the biggest regatta on their home schedule, the Windermere Cup.

"We're very excited for Windermere Cup coming up this weekend to continue our improvement and show what we have in front of all the hometown fans," McElvaine said.

The Huskies host the annual Windermere Cup regatta, Saturday, May 7 at 10:20 a.m. on the Montlake Cut This year's field includes Cornell and the Czech National Team along with a pairs race involving members of the U.S. men's eight that won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics.

"We've got a big challenge coming again next week because those guys from Cornell and the Czech Republic are not going to be easy to beat," exclaimed Ernst. "We've got to be right on our game."
