PORTLAND, Ore. - Washington crews finished one-two in the men's and women's featured races Saturday as the Huskies opened their 2005-06 rowing season at the 17th-annual Portland Loop Regatta on the Willamette River.

The head races were contested on a 7,000-meter stretch of the river from Lake Oswego Pointe to Oaks Park. Teams started from a single-file line at set intervals in a time-trail format.

The two UW women's boats finished nearly two minutes ahead of third-place Oregon State and over six minutes ahead of the rest of the field.

The Huskies top women's eight-oared crew covered the course in 22-minutes, 25.14-seconds to capture the Collegiate Eights championship. UW's second boat trailed the winner by 29 seconds with a runner-up time of 22:54.78. The Beavers placed third in 24:52.42 followed by Portland's "A" (29:25.24) and "B" (29:26.92) entries and a Portland State crew (34:20.73).

The UW men's varsity won its Championship Eight competition, outracing a second Husky entry and six other boats. The Huskies top crew registered a winning time of 20:05.03 and their second boat was second in 20:49.83. Those two left the rest of the field nearly one minute back in their wake. Washington State placed third in 21:47.04 followed by Oregon State "A" (22:34.55), OSU "B" (22:40.70), Portland State (25:58.57) and Portland (27:03.43).
