Box Score

SEATTLE - Arizona State scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed as the 19th-ranked Sun Devils handed the Washington baseball team a 7-3 loss in a Pac-10 game Sunday at Husky Ballpark. The loss almost certainly ended the Huskies' slim hopes of making the postseason as they can no longer finish .500 in Pac-10 play.

The first three ASU batters of the game reached base. Nick Walsh and Chris Duffy both walked before Casey Myers loaded the bases with a single. Left fielder Rod Allen followed with a two-run single and, after a strikeout, a groundout from Mike Lopez sent Myers home to make it 3-0.

Husky starter Zack Daniels (4-2) lasted only an inning and one-third, walking six and allowing three runs in the loss. Reliever Greg Colburn, who had thrown only seven innings over four outings all season, had a solid outing, working five and one-third innings and allowing only two earned runs while striking out five. Washington fell to 29-18 overall and 7-13 in conference play.

ASU starter Jon Switzer (5-4) gave up two runs and struck out seven in five innings of work for the victory as the Sun Devils moved to 33-16-1 overall and 11-9 in the league. Aaron Klusman pitched the final three innings to earn his second save of the year.

The Huskies closed the gap to 3-2 in the fifth when Marc Rittenhouse and Jay Garthwaite each drove in runs, but the Devils got a solo homer from Brooks Conrad in the sixth and scored three in the seventh to put the game away.

Garthwaite finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI. Bryan Johnson also added two hits for the Huskies. Conrad was the only Sun Devil with more than one hit, going 2-for-5 with a double and a home run.

The Huskies close out the three-game series against ASU Monday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Washington was also scheduled to play Tuesday and Wednesday evening's against Gonzaga, but that has been switched to a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday with no game Wednesday so that the Bulldogs can get to California in time for the West Coast Conference championship series.
