Post Game Quotes
Coach Tia Jackson
Opening Statement: "I am so proud of this team. They came out and more times than not executed everything defensively that we wanted. As many of you will know I'm a defensive coach and the changes that we made during the game the team executed near to perfection. I am extremely proud of them. We recognized mismatches inside offensively and we beat an extremely talented team in Arizona State.
On Game Plan: "We wanted to throw them off. They're very, very good at penetrating and we had to really contain that. They were extremely aggressive putting the ball on the floor. The other way the penetrated was with their low posts. If we could keep them off the block, that was key. "
,br> On ASU Shooting: "Typically they've been starting only one shooter so all we had to do was be aware of that one shooter. They ended up starting two and that's the first time they've done that. We had to be aware of two shooters on the floor but that helped us and we were able to pack it in in order to take away some of that penetration."
On Junior Sami Whitcomb: "She was really good at attacking. She did a great job of shaking them off, when a defender went back on her heels, that's when she would pull up and shoot a three. They were calling to her, we get that every game. They're on her all day, they're holding, they're grabbing - by any means necessary. I think she answered the call pretty well. If she was pressured she would take it to the hole and kick it if she had to or make the basket."
Washington Guard Sami Whitcomb
On what went well during the game: "I think early on we were penetrating really well and their help side is really good. It opens up stuff for whoever they are helping off of and a couple of times they helped off of me and it left me open on the three. I got a couple of open looks early on which was nice to get into a rhythm and it kind of worked from there. I would say our guards did a really good job at penetrating, getting in there and finding the open players."
On her career night and winning the game: "Oh it would've so depressing if we had lost. It would have been tough. It was really nice to get to be a part of this win that way."
On the mood in the locker room: "I think more than that, just the momentum we feel we are creating. Getting a split on the road, playing a good Oregon team tough like we did at their house, and winning against a really good Arizona State team even though they are sort of rebuilding. They are still a very quality team. I think it is great to be over .500 of course, but I think more than anything it feels good to get this win and carry it over."
On Arizona State: "There is no doubt losing a January. She was their program for so long. They are still in same in that they bring that defensive energy. They have really quick guards and a tall post. They are definitely a quality team still, but you have to acknowledge the fact they lost some good players too."
