SEATTLE - The 2012 Pac-12 champion Husky Basketball team took the court for the first time on Friday in preparation for their upcoming Europe and Africa trip. The Huskies are allowed a total of 10 practices before they leave for Barcelona, Spain on Aug. 25.
Unlike a typical start to the season, UW Coach Lorenzo Romar and his staff took it relatively easy on the team. Romar is pleased that the team showed up to the first day of practice well-conditioned and says it is too early to single out who stood out after day one's two hour practice.
"It's a long summer," Romar said. "We don't want to burn ourselves out too early."
He said the team concentrated on the half-court offense on Friday, which will be key for the Huskies when they play seven games overseas. Washington will see a variety of professional teams, including a couple of high "A" squads in their first stop.
The Huskies leave Seattle on Saturday, Aug. 25 and are scheduled to reach Barcelona a day later on Aug. 26. The first game is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 28. They will play again in Spain on Aug. 29.
The team will then head to Nice, France where they will play on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The Huskies wrap up the European portion of their tour with a game on Sept. 3 and 4 in Paris. The team departs France on Sept. 5 and heads to Dakar, Senegal for four days and will play once on Sept. 7.
The team of course will do more than play basketball on the trip. They will visit numerous famous sights of each region and learn about their cultures and histories along the way.
"I think everybody is excited about the trip," said Romar. "The guys will get to experience something out of the ordinary and gain an appreciation of a slice of the world they would not otherwise get to see."
