Tucson, Ariz. - The 26th-ranked Washington men's golf team shot even-par 288 in the first round at the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf West Regional, placing the Huskies 14th headed into the second round. Florida leads the field by six strokes after shooting 15-under 273. Host Arizona is second at 9-under 279.

Zach Bixler turned in the Huskies' best round of the day, shooting 3-under 69 in round one to tie for 15th place in the field. The sophomore had seven birdies on the round (holes two, three, six, eight, 13, 14 and 15) with four bogeys. Utah's Dustin Pimm led all individuals with a 6-under 66.

"It was a struggle for us," said Washington head coach Matt Thurmond. "It wasn't easy for anybody. Even Zach, who had our best round, was 2-over early. Nobody really felt comfortable out there today.

"Zach played really well after the first few holes. His most important hole was the bogey he made on hole 18, our ninth hole of the day. He turned what looked like a double or triple (bogey) into a bogey and that helped him gain momentum for the second half of the round."

Senior James Lepp carded Washington's second-best round of the day, shooting 1-under 71 to place 38th. Juniors Alex Prugh and Erik Olson shot matching rounds of 2-over 74 to tie for 83rd. Sterling Clark's 6-over 78 positioned him 128th headed into round two.

The top ten teams from the West Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Sunriver, Ore., May 31-June 3.

The second round of the NCAA West Regional starts tomorrow morning at 7 a.m., with Washington teeing off beginning at 8:05. Live scoring of the round is available at golfstat.com.
