SEATTLE - Washington left fielder Joe Meggs hit a first-inning home run and then later broke a 4-4 tie with an eighth-inning single as the Husky baseball team beat Seattle University, 5-4, Tuesday night at rainy Bannerwood Park.
Due to the weather, the game started about 45 minutes late and included a 59-minute rain delay in the second inning. It was the final non-conference game and final road contest of the regular season for the Huskies, who play host to Washington State in the final weekend of the year this Friday through Sunday.
The Huskies (28-24) led 4-0 before the Redhawks (22-28) came back to tie with a four-run sixth inning.
In the eighth, the Huskies loaded the bases on a pair of singles and an intentional walk. Meggs then hit a ball off the pitcher's glove and beat out a throw to first for a run-scoring, infield single, breaking the 4-4 tie.
UW reliever Tyler Kane (6-2) pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings to pick up the win. Adam Cimber worked the final two innings to earn his first save of the year. SU reliever Kyle Doyle (1-1) took the loss, allowing just the one run over his two and one-third innings.
Washington jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first when Meggs belted a one-out solo home run, his first of the season. The Huskies followed with four consecutive singles, with freshmen Robert Pehl and Trevor Mitsui each driving in a run, giving the UW a 3-0 lead after half an inning.
The Redhawks didn't get their first base runner of the night until Nate Roberts led off the sixth with a single. After a double from Grant Newton, Marcelino Morales bunted to drive in Roberts, cutting the Husky lead to 4-1. After a walk, Michael Tevlin knocked a double to the gap in right-center, driving in a pair. Riley Tompkins followed with a check-swing grounder that resulted in a throwing error, allowing Tevlin to cross with the tying run.
Meggs finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs batted in. Mitsui had three hits and both B.K. Santy and Jacob had two for the Huskies.
The Huskies close out the 2012 regular season this weekend as Washington State comes to Husky Ballpark for a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
