TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 1-ranked Arizona State used three home runs and some timely defense as the Sun Devils beat Washington, 10-4, Sunday at Packard Stadium to earn a series victory over the Huskies.
Washington (20-18 overall, 5-7 in the Pac-10) lost on Friday, but handed ASU its second home loss of the season on Saturday. Arizona State moved to 33-5 overall and 11-4 in the Pac-10, good for first place.
Washington notched 14 hits in the game, but Arizona State turned a total of five double plays to limit the Huskies' scoring.
Starter Jake Borup improved to 8-1 with the victory, allowing three runs on 11 hits over five and one-third innings. Husky starter Geoff Brown (1-3) was saddled with the loss, giving up five run on eight hits over four frames.
ASU took the lead with a pair of runs in the first, but it could have been more. After Drew Maggi led off the opening inning with a homer, the Devils loaded the bases with not outs. However, a double-play groundout scored one run and a ground ball to short ended the inning with a 2-0 Arizona State edge.
In the third, MacPhee led off with a double and Calhoun followed with a long home run to make it 4-0.
Washington, which had several good scoring chances in the early going but hit into three double plays through the first four innings, scratched its first run of the game in the fifth inning. Caleb Brown was hit by a pitch to open the inning and eventually scored on a two-out single from junior David Bentrott, cutting the lead to 4-1.
However, ASU replied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Raoul Torrez drove in two with a two-out single and then scored on a Matt Newman double.
The Huskies closed the gap to 7-3 in the sixth, the Huskies loaded the bases with no outs. Brown beat out a would-be double-play grounder to short to score one on a fielder's choice and Scott followed with an RBI single to bring in another.
But the Devils effectively put the game away in the seventh thanks to a two-run homer from Zach Wilson.
In the ninth, Scott hit his four homer of the season, a one-out solo shot, to wrap up the Huskies' scoring.
The Huskies return home for games Tuesday and Wednesday vs. Gonzaga before hosting Stanford next weekend. The Saturday game vs. Stanford will be played at Safeco Field, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday's game vs. Gonzaga and Saturday's vs. Stanford will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
