PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomore Kyle Conley and freshmen Troy Scott and Sean Meehan all hit two-run home runs and senior Andy Lentz added a solo shot as the Washington baseball team won its fourth straight on the road, beating Portland, 9-2, Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field.
Washington improved to 29-16 with the win while the Pilots fell to 19-26. UW freshman Ben Guidos (3-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings.
The Huskies got on the board in the second inning. After Jake Rife singled, Scott hit his sixth home run of the season, going the opposite way to left-center field. After two outs, the UW got one more off of three straight hits, the last of them an RBI singles from second baseman Bradley Boyer that gave Washington a 3-0 lead.
The Pilots had only one runner reach base before a big rally in the fourth. After a hit batter, a single and a sacrifice bunt, Portland got on the board on a fielder's choice grounder from Clayton Shaw. The Pilots then loaded the bases and got a second run on an infield single from Cort Carpenter, cutting the Husky lead to 3-2.
Washington restored its three-run lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Lentz singled and Conley, named the Pac-10 Player of the Week earlier Tuesday, belted his 13th home run of the season to right field, making it a 5-2 UW lead. The homer was Conley's ninth in his last 15 games.
The Huskies got their third two-run homer of the day in the sixth as Scott led off with a double and Meehan followed with his third round-tripper of the season, making it 7-2.
Lentz led off the seventh inning with a solo homer to center, his fourth of the year. Later in the seventh, an RBI single from Jarett Jackson added the ninth Husky run.
All nine UW starters had a hit in the game, despite the fact that all but one of them were replaced by substitutes at some point. Meehan had three hits while Scott was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
This weekend, Washington State comes to Husky Ballpark for the Apple Cup of baseball, a three-game series Friday through Sunday. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
