Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Jorden Merry threw six shutout innings and Washington got home runs from Ty Rasmussen, Kyle Conley and Bradley Boyer as the Huskies beat UC Riverside, 5-2, Monday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex.

The win evened the season-opening, four-game series at two wins apiece as both teams are now 2-2.

Merry, a junior from Pasco who threw six innings in a shutout win over Riverside last season, didn't allow a baserunner until walking Joey Gonzales with one out in the fourth inning. He didn't allow a hit until a leadoff single in the first.

He went six innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven for the win. UCR starter Paul Bargas, a transfer from Arizona, took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings. UW reliever Brian Pearl worked the ninth to pick up the save.

The Dawgs got off the mark first when Rasmussen led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to left, his first of the season. The following inning, Boyer reached when his fly ball to center was dropped and Conley followed with a towering home run to center field, increasing the lead to 3-0.

UCR mounted its first threat in the fifth. After singles from Aaron Wible and Drew Garcia and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out, Merry fanned the next two batters to keep the score at 3-0.

Conley tacked on another RBI in the seventh with a sacrifice fly. He finished the game 1-for-3 with three runs batted in.

Riverside broke up the shutout in the seventh. With Merry out of the game, UCR got a one-out double from Drew Garcia, a walk to Ryan Goetz and an infield single from Brett Hambright to load the bases with one out. Shortstop Brian Horst laced a single through the left side to plate two runs, cutting the Husky lead to 4-2.

Boyer hit a solo homer in the ninth to close out the scoring.

The Huskies open the home schedule Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. against defending NAIA champion Lewis-Clark State. Fans can catch live audio or video, plus live stats, for free at gohuskies.com.
