Seattle - Five members of the Husky football team earned first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors today. That group was headed up by senior safety Jimmy Newell, who was a repeat selection. Newell has a 3.30 GPA as a finance major.
Washington's Cody Ellis and Ty Eriks had the highest grade point averages of any players earning first-team honors. Ellis, a redshirt freshman, has a 3.71 GPA as an architecture major. Eriks sports a 3.70 GPA in biology. Also earning first-team honors were quarter back Casey Paus, who has a 3.28 GPA in art and fullback James Sims, a 3.40 student in literature.
Washington, Stanford and California dominated the first-team selections with five representatives each.
Husky wide receiver Quintin Daniels was a second-team pick. He has a 3.16 GPA but has yet to declare a major. Washington players earning honorable mention consideration included sophomore linebacker Tahj Bomar, redshirt freshman place kicker Michael Braunstein, redshirt freshman safety Chris Hemphill, junior place kicker Evan Knudson, redshirt freshman tight end Robert Lewis and redshirt freshman linebacker Kyle Trew.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be either a starter or significant substitute.
