SEATTLE - University of Washington men's basketball player Isaiah Thomas has been selected as a candidate for the Naismith Award, announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and expectations for this season, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's player-of-the-year award.

Thomas, a 5-foot-9 junior from Tacoma, Wash., was second on the team in scoring as a sophomore and amassed more points through his first two seasons than any player previously to start their Husky career.

He was a 2010 First Team All-Pac-10 member that averaged 16.9 points per game, 3.9 reounds and dished out 111 assists. Thomas helped Washington win the 2010 Pac-10 Tournament -- where he was named the Most Outstanding Player -- and led them to the NCAA Sweet 16.

In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will release the midseason team of 30, followed in March by the four finalists.

The Naismith Trophy has been given annually since 1969 to college basketball's player of the year.
