LOS ANGELES - Washington's throwers got loose today in the first outdoor competition of the 2012 season, with the Huskies competing at the USC Trojan Invitational at a couple different locations in L.A. today. The meet continues tomorrow with the majority of the track and field events.
The javelin throwers finally got to gauge where all their offseason work has put them today, having waited patiently through the indoor season. Junior All-American Joe Zimmerman was second with a best toss of 228-feet, 9-inches, which already should be enough to at least qualify him for NCAA Prelims. Zimmerman's sixth and last attempt was his best by more than three meters. Freshman Curtis Clauson of Edmonds, Wash. also made a strong debut with a best throw of 207-4.
All-American Brooke Pighin returned for the women after redshirting the 2011 season, and she threw 154-10 for sixth-place in a very strong field. Senior Amanda Peterson was fifth with a toss of 159-3. Both of those marks would have easily qualified for Prelims last year. Junior Jordin Seekins also opened with a mark just five inches off her PR, going 140-7.
Senior Angus Taylor, a three-time NCAA Prelim qualifier, had a solid opener in the men's hammer throw, throwing 187-11, and junior Conner Larned went 171-feet as they placed fifth and sixth. Both will also throw the discus tomorrow.
The only Husky on the track tonight was sophomore Phoebe Merritt who ran the 3,000-meters. She was fifth overall in a time of 9:51.49.
Action resumes at 10 a.m. tomorrow at USC's Loker Stadium.
