SEATTLE - Seven Huskies are headed to prestigious summer opportunities with USRowing, men's crew coach Michael Callahan announced on Wednesday.

For the U-23 selection camp, both Hans Struzyna and Ambrose Puttmann will be heading to the sculling camp in Oklahoma City on June 9. Ty Otto, Blaise Didier and Rob Munn will travel to the sweep camp in Oakland, Calif. On June 18, the athletes will then head to Chula Vista, Calif., to complete the selection process.

The trials will help USRowing select various teams to compete at the U-23 World Championships in Brest, Belarus, on July 22-25.

Furthermore, Vashon Island's Matt Zapel, along with Robert Squires, are headed to the U-23 development camp in Oklahoma City this summer.

This is the ethos of Husky rowing - turning capable oarsmen into future national team candidates for their respective countries.

"One of our goals is to facilitate rowers who have national team aspirations," Callahan said. "During the season, we work to develop their skill sets by doing a lot of work in the pair boats, which is what they'll experience with international rowing."

Both Struzyna - a junior from nearby Kirkland - and Otto row in the varsity eight boat, which is looking to put a coda on a stellar, undefeated season at the IRAs in June. Struzyna was part of the IRA-winning varsity eight in 2009 and later attended the U-23 selection camp. This will be the first selection opportunity for Otto, who rows three seat in the men's varsity eight.

Didier has extensive international experience on his rowing resume. He rowed in the gold-medal winning eight at the U-23 World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany in 2008, and then competed again at the 2009 World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic. Didier rows in the second varsity for the Huskies. Callahan said this opportunity will be crucial for him to springboard towards the 2012 Olympics in London.

Puttmann and Munn both rowed in the undefeated freshmen eight that dominated the 2009 campaign for the Huskies. This will be the first time though the international selection process for the duo.
