SEATTLE - When the Dempsey Indoor opens its doors for the first time this season on Saturday, hundreds of track and field athletes including a number of Huskies will kick off their collegiate careers. In the midst of the action, they will have a chance to watch several of the best athletes in the world, including Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp and Olympic finalist Matt Centrowitz, two of the standouts for Team USA at the 2012 London Games, running the mile.
The UW Indoor Preview, the first of six indoor meets on the 2013 slate, is set for this Saturday with the first event at 8:00 a.m. and continuing on all day until approximately 6:00 p.m. Rupp and Centrowitz, who train with the Nike Oregon Project in Portland, will begin their indoor seasons in the top heat of the mile, set for approximately 12:20 p.m., with Centrowitz also entered in the 800-meters. The Dempsey record of 3:54.52 could be in jeopardy.
Rupp became the first American in 48 years to win a medal in the 10,000-meters, when he placed second behind training partner Mo Farah in London last summer. He holds the American record in that event. Centrowitz just missed a medal of his own by .04 seconds, as he placed fourth in the finals of the 1,500-meters in London. He holds a bronze medal at that distance from the 2011 World Championships. Yet another 2012 U.S. Olympian, Donn Cabral, will also be in that heat. Cabral made the London steeplechase final, placing eighth.
Dozens of Husky returners will be aiming to get their 2013 seasons off on the right foot, while several freshmen will don their UW jerseys for the first time in competition. A total of nine Huskies who have earned All-America honors will be in action on Saturday, mostly in the field events and sprints.
Three-time All-American Jeremy Taiwo will be busy on Saturday, getting back to work after redshirting the 2012 season. He's entered in the 60m hurdles, high jump, and shot put. Former relay All-American Colton Dunn also returns after a redshirt year, running the 60m dash and in the 4x400m relay.
400-meter school record holder and NCAA DMR champ Jordan Carlson leads a large group of Husky women's sprinters at 200-meters. Jaleecia Roland and Shelby Williams will be all over the Dempsey, as they start sharpening their pentathlon skills. All-America honorable mention A.J. Maricich starts his junior season in the high jump after a great end to his 2012 campaign, and watch for Maurice McNeal stepping up in distance to run the 600-meters.
The pole vault will feature NCAA fourth-place finisher and outdoor school record-holder J.J. Juilfs goes on the men's side, while former UW great Scott Roth also jumps. Roth was third at the 2012 US Olympic Trials. Freshmen Jax Thoirs, Chris Williams, and Kristina Owsinski are also looking for big debuts as they're in the top flights.
Williams will also make his 60m hurdles debut, as will heralded frosh Daje Pugh on the women's side. More first-year Dawgs looking to impress include Quadelle Satterwhite and Travis Marshall in the 60-meter dash, who will also run a 4x4 with fellow freshmen Kaid Tipton and Derrick Jones. In the throws, freshmen Jack Scheideman, Bev Coleman, Hannah Sherrill, Alyx Toeaina, Kyle White, and Carolyn Gravelle will all compete attached in the shot and weight throws.
