Washington vs. San Diego November 26, 2005 Post Game Quotes
Washington Head Coach June Daugherty
General Comments: "We knew that San Diego would be a very good team. They're athletic and they shoot the ball so well. They're solid all the way around. They switched up the defense quite a bit on us and we got a little bit out of sync in that first half, but we were able to show quite a bit of poise to get ourselves back and going in our system. In the second half we did a very good job on the boards and started to limit their second opportunities. We were able to get in our running game and that is something we want to do a better job of. I thought our bench in particular was really powerful and solid for us tonight."
On second half shooting: "We were able to limit them to one and out which enabled us to get into our running game a little bit and that's what we like to do. We've been doing a pretty good job of working it inside out, especially with kicking it out. Emily (Florence) had those two big threes late, but I thought we showed a lot more poise with our shot selection. In the second half (Andrea) Plouffe gave us that power game inside and with as close as she is inside, she'd better make them."
On San Diego making it close in the second half: "That was very much expected after seeing tape on them and knowing how well they played ASU just eight days ago. We've been in that situation a lot this year. I thought in this game, more than the others, we showed a lot more poise and we regrouped and we were very clear about what we had to do."
On caring who takes big shots: "I liked the way that (Breanne) Watson was playing down the stretch, but I wanted to go to a smaller lineup against the pressure to work the time and score a little bit more. Normally what opens up is the three and I thought at this time and at this point in our season, this was a good group to have out there."
On designing plays for particular players: "Mike called the set on the last one where Bre came over on the pick - it was supposed to be a two-man game for Cameo (Hicks). I think she saw a seam and started to go and then she got trapped. But definitely down the stretch during timeouts we had designated plays going for different people. Mike does a really good job with that to work with isolation and to see who's hot."
On the two 3-point baskets at the end of the game: "I knew that if I kept shooting, eventually they would go in. I have been practicing a lot, and getting a lot of shots up before the game, and pretty much my confidence went up towards the end of the game. I was open, and we were moving the ball around really well, and we got a lot of open shots, and saw that it was open, so I didn't even think about it."
On the similarities between San Diego and Washington: "Yeah I think so. They played a lot like us when they were switching back from man to zone like we were, but I was expecting it. We came out pretty soft in the first half, but in the second half we went after them, and put them back on their heels, and our transition game was a lot better in the second half, and we needed that energy, and I think that is what put us back into the lead."
On seeing more double teams played on her: "Not so far. But I really feel like teams don't think they can double-team us because we have so many weapons out there, so I think teams are hesitant to double team us.
On the career high in points: " I have just been working hard. I don't really think too much about points. I just focus on working hard for my teammates, and doing whatever I can for them."
