SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team, preparing for the start of the 1999 season, retained its positions in two national polls this week.

The Huskies held their spot at No. 21 in the Baseball America Top 25 and were once again No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll. It was the first release of either ranking since the preseason polls were released in December. The first regular-season USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll will be released next week. Washington was picked No. 21 in that poll.

Washington begins the season this Thursday at the Dixie Tournament in St. George, Utah. Thursday, the Dawgs take on Brigham Young. Friday, Washington plays Southern Utah, and on Saturday, the UW closes out the opening weekend with another game against BYU.

Florida State (6-0) moved up in both polls, taking over the No. 1 spot in the Baseball America rankings after sweeping three games from Arizona State last weekend. Southern California, ranked No. 1 in the preseason, fell to fourth after losing three games at Texas. Wichita State, which also opens this weekend, retained its No. 1 spot in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
