EUGENE, Ore. - Washington senior Jacob Predmore recorded career-high marks in the final two first-day events Saturday to claim second place entering the final day of the Pacific-10 Conference decathlon championships at Oregon's Hayward Field.

Defending champion Bevan Hart of California holds a slim 70-point lead over Predmore, matching last season's conference standings after one day. Hart went on to post a winning 7,662-point total at the 1999 championships while Predmore failed to clear any pole vault height and dropped to sixth place.

Hart closed out Saturday with a winning time of 48.55 in the 400 meters, pushing his first-day total to 3,951. Predmore amassed 3,881 points to better last year's opening-day total by 79 points. Oregon's Santiago Lorenzo has a third-place total of 3,868.

A product of Cedarcret High School in Duvall, Wash., Predmore is competing in just his fourth career decathlon. He tied for top honors in the high jump, matching the 6-6 3/4 clearance of USC's Marcell Allmond. That was a career-best mark for Predmore who also improved his fastest 400-meter time with a 49.43-second clocking.

In other events, Predmore finished sixth in the 100 meters (11.38), third in the long jump (23-0 3/4) and sixth in the shot put (41-1).

The final five decathlon events will be contested on Sunday. The rest of the Huskies join Predmore in Eugene next weekend for the Pac-10 championship meet.
