Outfielder Nick Stefonick has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Northern Division Player of the Week (April 27-May 3), the conference office announced late yesterday. Oregon State pitcher Andrew Checketts won the Pitcher of the Week honor.
Stefonick, a junior from Seattle's O'Dea High, earned the award, the first of his career, by batting .563 (9-for-16) last weekend as the Huskies took three of four games from Oregon State and won their third straight Pac-10 North championship. Stefonick also contributed seven runs, two doubles, two triples, a homer, 10 runs batted in and two stolen bases over the four games. In Sunday's title clincher, the Husky right fielder went 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.
Stefonick currently leads the Pac-10 Northern Division with his .405 batting average.
Today and Wednesday, the Huskies take on Portland before closing out the regular season with a three-game series vs. California this weekend at Husky Ballpark. May 14-16, the Huskies will host the Southern Division champion (either No. 1 Stanford or No. 7 USC) in the best-of-three Pac-10 Championship Series.
