CUBA - The University of Washington baseball team, in the first of four games it will play on its trip to Cuba, beat a team of Cuban youth players, 17-2, Saturday morning at the national stadium in Havana.

Washington belted six home runs including two from sophomore catcher Jefferson Thiel. Sophomores outfielder Justin Drake, shortstop Tila Reynolds, outfielder Tyler Davidson, and first baseman Jay Garthwaite all had home runs. Junior right-hander Randy Vanderplow got the win for the Huskies. Vanderplow yielded a two-run homer by Cuba's Jairon Larringa.

The Huskies will take on the same team Sunday and again on Tuesday before playing a split-squad game on Wednesday. In that contest, the two teams will consist of half Huskies and half Cubans. The team returns to Seattle early on the morning of Friday, Sept. 8.
