Husky Sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker Reaps Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington junior Ja'Warren Hooker, who won both sprint championships last weekend in front of 18,000 spectators at the prestigious Drake Relays, was the recipient of two track & field awards on Tuesday.

The Ellensburg (Wash.) High School product received the Maury White Award, honoring the outstanding men's performer at the Drake Relays, and was voted the Pacific-10 Conference men's track Athlete of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

Hooker won the 100- and 200-meter races at the 91st-annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. He clocked a time of 10.20 in the 100-meter preliminaries, his fastest legal time of the season and just .02 off his school-record mark.

In the finals, Hooker registered a winning time of 10.28 to earn his second Drake 100-meter crown. He collected his first 100-meter title at the 1998 Drake Relays.

Hooker raced to a victory in the special invitational 200-meter race with a time of 20.63.

On April 17, Hooker was named the Pac-10 Athlete of the Week after breaking the 19-year-old school 200-meter record with a time of 20.33.

Hooker has reached NCAA automatic qualifying standards in the 100- and 200-meter events. He will compete at the NCAA Division I Championships, May 31-June 3 in Durham, N.C.

The Husky track & field team travels to Provo, Utah for Saturday's Brigham Young Tri-Meet.
