COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The 14th-ranked Washington baseball team, down 6-0 after one inning, came back and staved off elimination from the NCAA Central Regional by beating No. 7 Rice, 20-11, Friday at Olsen Field.

The Huskies (40-16) will next take on sixth-seeded Oral Roberts Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PDT in an elimination game.

Friday, Washington broke an NCAA record as 10 Huskies were hit by pitches. The old mark of nine had been set by three teams.

Rice (46-16), the top seed in regional took advantage of three walks and an a crucial error to take a 6-0 lead in the first. With two out and the bases loaded by walks, UW shortstop Kevin Miller made the error, allowing a run to score. After a single plated two more, Justin Berg hit a three-run homer to make it 6-0.

But, after scoring a run in the third, the Huskies took the lead with a six-run fourth inning. DH Jim Na got it started with a three-run homer and Kevin Miller drove in two more with his 12th round-tripper. In the fifth inning, Washington extended the lead with five runs, including four on a grand slam by Nick Stefonick, who went 2-for-6 with seven RBI on the day.

Na finished the day going 4-for-5 with three RBI. Chris Magruder was only 1-for-4, but scored three runs and drove in three more. Ed Erickson, who hit his 13th homer, was 2-for-5 with three RBI.

Washington freshman Jeff Carlsen threw four and one-third innings in the start, allowing eight runs (all unearned) on seven hits. Junior Bryan Williamson came on to work the final four and two-thirds for the victory to improve to 3-0.

Rice reliever Jesse Kurtz-Nicholl suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs in one and two-thirds.
